A few months after I started escorting in Second Life, I created a profile pick that detailed exactly why I would never be friends with a client. I spelled out that I was here to get paid, to deliver a fantasy, and that my time was my time. It wasnโt there to be monopolized by anyone. Over the years Iโve had different variations of that same pick. I think right now it basically just says โIM someone else.โ
The biggest problem most escorts in Second Life face isnโt failing to charge upfront or struggling to get enough hires. Itโs a lack of understanding on how to set and enforce boundaries. Setting and enforcing your boundaries makes the biggest difference in this industry. Especially when your clients are actively trying to break down those boundaries.
Handling client communication is a fine art. Believe it or not, thereโs a very specific strategy to it that works to your advantage. But somewhere along the line, people start confusing customer service with genuine friendship.
Let me break down exactly how you should handle a client in your IMs and why you keep messing it up.

The Art of the Three Message Rule
When a client messages you, your goal is to give them just enough information to hire you and absolutely nothing more. Letโs look at a standard interaction that I have.
Standard Interaction
Silence. Two or three messages, and thatโs all they get.
Because in those very few messages, Iโve effectively given them the entire pitch. I told them Iโm active. I told them Iโm available for work. I told them exactly where I am. They now have all the information they need to teleport over and hire me. It really is that simple.
I donโt need to sit there and play the role of their virtual best friend. I donโt need to spend twenty minutes luring them in and flirting with them for free. Iโll do it in person, when they show up ready to spend. Free attention doesnโt pay for anything. If they want my time, they know where the tip jars are.
Iโm not going to sit around and panic over a missed hire either because theyโre not getting my time for free. Why? Because I simply donโt care enough to let it bother me. Who cares if one guy decides to walk away? Guess what? Someone else will come along. The world isnโt going to abruptly end just because your bank account and your pussy arenโt getting stuffed right this second.
The Three Message Rule
Protecting the Value of Your Service
A lot of escorts get confused about the Girlfriend Experience. GFE is a service you sell. Itโs an act. Youโre selling your time to be their perfect, attentive fantasy. When the time is up, the fantasy ends.
When you start giving them that attention for free in your IMs, you destroy the value of your own service. Youโre giving away the milk and wondering why nobody is buying the cow.
Your time is your product.
Stop handing out free samples to guys who are just bored.

Ask Yourself Why You Keep Doing It
I want you to ask yourself a serious question. Itโs a question that might make you spiral a bit.
A client wants to become your friend. You know you shouldnโt let them. You know it will get messy. Thereโs a high chance theyโll try to manipulate you into giving them free time. Thereโs an even higher chance that weird, possessive jealousy will start creeping in down the line. You accept the friend request anyway.
You sit there and chat with them for hours off the clock.
Why? Thatโs the biggest question you need to confront right now. Why do you do it?
There are really only three answers to this.
One is that you genuinely donโt like saying โnoโ to people. Youโre a people pleaser. If thatโs the case, this isnโt the job path for you. To survive as an escort, you need to be able to put a solid boundary down and stick to it like concrete. Sometimes enforcing that boundary means you might lose a client. Who cares. Youโll get another one.
Another answer is that you have your entire self worth tied up in whether or not someone likes you. You need them to like you more than they liked the escort they hired the day before. Again, this isnโt the job for you. Putting your self worth into sex work and seeking personal validation from clients is a surefire way to completely fuck your mental health up.
The last potential reason is that youโre just an idiot. And once again, this isnโt the job for you.
Do you see the pattern here?

The Illusion of the Friendship Whale
I hear this excuse all the time. โBut Jess, if I become his friend, heโll be loyal and spend way more money on me.โ
No, he will not.
This is the biggest lie amateur escorts tell themselves. You think youโre playing the long game by listening to his real life problems and acting like his buddy. In reality, youโre just turning yourself into his free therapist. When he actually wants to spend money and get off, heโs going to go hire the girl who doesnโt give him the time of day. Heโs going to drop his Lindens on the escort who maintained her mystique and kept things professional. You get the emotional dumping, and the girl with boundaries gets the cash.
Contact Lists vs. Friendships
We need to talk about the difference between managing a contact list and treating a client like a friend.
Adding someone to your contact list when youโre a freelance escort is just a business tactic. It acts as a directory. When you freelance, your clients donโt really know where you are going to be from day to day. Adding them to your list makes sense because it makes it easier for them to find you and spend money.
Adding them when you work at a venue is unnecessary. They know exactly where the place is. They have the landmark. Theyโve been there before. There is no business reason for them to be on your friends list.
Even if you do keep a contact list, having someone on it and treating them as a friend are two entirely different things. As an escort, you cannot become friends with a client. It gets messy. They start thinking they have a claim on you. Theyโll get jealous when you donโt respond to their IMs because youโre busy with a paying client. Or worse, they show up to wherever you are, see you with someone else, and throw a jealous tantrum.
The Ripple Effect: How You Screw the Rest of Us
The worst part of all this is that you arenโt the only victim of your bad decisions.
When you blur those lines and give a client the girlfriend experience for free, you set a brand new standard in their head. Youโve just taught this client that every single escort secretly wants friendship. Clients donโt differentiate between us. They think we all operate exactly the same way.
So now, when that exact same client goes to another escort the next day and she refuses to play their game, she instantly becomes the bad guy. Sheโs the bitch. Sheโs the cold, evil one who just wants their money. Sheโs the one who suffers abuse in IMs because you couldnโt be bothered to enforce a basic professional boundary.
This is what so many people in this industry fail to realize. Your actions as an escort do not just affect you. They affect every other escort on the grid. When you cheapen your time and let clients treat you like a buddy, you make the job ten times harder for the girls who actually treat this the way it should be treated.
The Outlier Complex
Clients will inevitably take your boundaries personally. Theyโll get upset and convince themselves that theyโre the outlier. In their hearts, they truly believe they are a friend. Itโs your responsibility to manage that mindset. Iโm sure there is an isolated case somewhere in history where a client and escort became genuine friends and it was amazing. The reality is that the odds of them respecting your limits and continuing to pay for your time are incredibly slim.
The truth is that your boundaries have nothing to do with them as individuals. Youโre not rejecting them because they are terrible people or socially inept.
Itโs just business.
