Iโve long been a devotee of Firestorm. Itโs the comfortable pair of jeans we all wear in Second Life. But ever since the introduction of PBR (Physically Based Rendering), Firestorm has feltโฆ heavy. The lag in busy sims is noticeable, the texture trashing is real, and the crash rate has crept up.
That is why I revisited the Alchemy Viewer. If youโre brand new to the grid and this technical talk sounds overwhelming, you might want to start with my Second Life newcomers guide to learn the basics first.
Unlike Firestorm, which is built on years of legacy features, Alchemy is a streamlined, open-source viewer that focuses purely on speed and visual fidelity. It runs on a cleaner codebase and often incorporates Linden Labโs newest rendering tech before other TPVs.
If Black Dragon is for photography and Firestorm is for building, Alchemy is for living.
YES, if: You have a modern computer and Firestorm feels sluggish. Alchemy typically delivers 15-20% higher FPS because it lacks the โlegacy code bloat.โ
NO, if: You rely heavily on specific building tools or the โPie Menuโ interface that you refuse to relearn.

Why Alchemy is Faster (The Technical Bit)
Alchemy isnโt just โmagicallyโ faster. Itโs faster for two specific reasons:
- Codebase Efficiency: It strips out the โbloatโ features that 90% of users donโt touch, freeing up memory.
- Modern Rendering: It often uses newer implementations of OpenGL and PBR rendering than the stable Firestorm release.
In my tests, I consistently get 15-20 FPS higher in Alchemy than Firestorm in the same crowded club. If you are struggling with lag in crowded sims, switching viewers is often more effective than buying a new graphics card.
The Interface Shock (Read This First)
If you are coming from Firestorm, you will hate the Alchemy interface for exactly 24 hours. Alchemy uses a Sidebar UI (closer to the official Linden Viewer) rather than the bottom-bar style of Firestorm.
Tip: You can customize the toolbar buttons by right-clicking any button and selecting โToolbar Buttons.โ
Where is everything? Inventory, Outfits, and Friends are in the buttons on the left or right vertical bars.
Where is the Refresh button? You usually have to right-click your avatar > โRefresh Attachmentsโ or use the top menu Avatar > Health > Refresh Attachments.
Yes, but it isnโt the massive popup window you are used to. Alchemy uses the modern โRegion Objectsโ tool (found under World > Region Objects).
The Difference: Firestormโs Area Search acts like a deep scanner. Alchemyโs finder is lighter so it will find your lost shoe, but itโs less aggressive at scanning thousands of scripts.
In Firestorm, you right-click > Derender. In Alchemy, this feature is called โBlockโ or โMuteโ.
The Process: Right-click the offending object > Manage > Block. This adds the object to your Asset Blacklist, meaning it will vanish and never re-rez. Great for removing annoying flashing lights in clubs. You can also use Session Derender if you just want a temporary fix.

Optimized Graphics Settings for 2026
Alchemy looks different out of the box. With the new PBR lighting system, you need to tweak a few things to get that โHigh-Endโ look without melting your GPU.
To get the most out of these high-quality PBR settings, you need an avatar that looks the part; read my breakdown of the best mesh bodies in Second Life to upgrade your look.
| Setting | Recommended Value | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Reflection Probes | Manual / Static | Essential for PBR materials to look shiny, but โAutoโ kills FPS. |
| Shadows | Sun/Moon + Projectors | Gives depth. Alchemy handles shadows much better than Firestorm. |
| Draw Distance | 128m โ 160m | Donโt go higher. Use โImpostorsโ to see avatars further away efficiently. |
| Ambient Occlusion | Enabled | Adds soft shadows in corners. Makes the world look less โflat.โ |
| Depth of Field | OFF (For gameplay) | Alchemyโs default blur is aggressive. Only turn on for screenshots. |

RLV & Adult Play
Does Alchemy support RLV? Yes. It uses RLVa (the same implementation used by the Catznip Viewer), which is fully compatible with almost all RLV furniture, collars (OpenCollar), and traps.
How to Enable RLV in Alchemy:
- Go to
Preferences (Ctrl+P) - Navigate to the
Alchemytab >RLVsub-tab. - Check โEnable RLV.โ
- Restart the viewer.
My experience: I find RLV scripts execute slightly faster on Alchemy because of the lower script lag overhead of the viewer itself. If you are into heavy roleplay that involves a lot of scripted attachments, this viewer is a lifesaver.
Alchemy for Photographers (vs. Black Dragon)
The search results are full of people asking: โIs Alchemy better than Black Dragon for photos?โ Here is the honest truth from someone who takes Second Life photography seriously.
The Black Dragon Advantage: Black Dragon renders โvolumetric lightingโ and skin sheen slightly better. If you are taking a $10,000L commission photo, use Black Dragon.
The Alchemy Advantage: Alchemy is the โLive Gameplayโ photographerโs choice.
- The Roll Angle: Yes, Alchemy allows you to roll your camera (tilt your head) just like Black Dragon. Hold
Shift+Left/Right Arrow(or check your camera controls). - High-Res Snapshots: Alchemy handles 4K, 6K, and 8K snapshots much more stably than Firestorm, which often crashes at high resolutions.
- Depth of Field (DoF): Alchemyโs DoF is smoother and creamier (more โbokehโ) than Firestorm, which often looks jagged.
The Verdict: I use Black Dragon for studio shoots. I use Alchemy for candid shots at events because I can actually move my camera without fighting a complex UI.

Installation & Mac Support (Apple Silicon)
One of the biggest myths is that Alchemy is โWindows only.โ That is false.
- Windows: Standard 64-bit installer.
- Mac: Alchemy offers solid macOS support. Note for M1/M2/M3 users: While Linden Lab now has a native Apple Silicon viewer, Alchemy runs exceptionally well on Macs via Rosetta, often smoother than the default viewer due to better texture caching.
- Linux: Yes, it has native Linux builds.
You can download the latest version directly from the Official Alchemy Viewer Website.
Alchemy includes a native Animation Overrider (AO). Instead of wearing a script-heavy HUD that lags the sim, use the built-in one to reduce your script count and improve performance.
Entering a laggy club? Donโt open settings. Use CTRL + SHIFT + 1 to instantly lower your draw distance, or CTRL + SHIFT + 9 to increase it.
Want a perfect screenshot without the buttons? Press CTRL + ALT + F1 to instantly toggle the entire UI off and on.
Streamline your workflow. Go to Preferences > Control to assign your own hotkeys. I map my โRefresh Attachmentsโ to a single key for emergencies.
Where to Get Help
Unlike Firestorm, which has an army of support volunteers available 24/7, Alchemy is a leaner operation. It is driven by a tighter community of open-source enthusiasts and developers. This means you wonโt always get an instant reply in-world, so knowing where to look for help is useful.
If you run into a crash, a โbake fail,โ or a texture glitch, here is your escalation ladder:
1. The Official Alchemy Discord
This is where the actual development happens. Unlike the chaotic in-world groups, the Discord is where you will find the developers (like Cinder Roxley) and the power users.
- Best for: Reporting serious bugs, asking about specific PBR settings, and checking if the viewer is down.
- Atmosphere: Technical and direct. Donโt ask โHow do I dress my avatar?โ here. Ask โWhy is my log showing a texture decode error?โ
2. The In-World Group
There is an in-world group named โ.:[Alchemy Viewer]:.โ.
- Best for: Quick questions while you are logged in.
- Note: It is much quieter than the Firestorm support group. If you donโt get an answer immediately, donโt spam. Most users are idle.
3. The Issue Tracker (JIRA)
If you find a genuine bug, like a specific mesh object crashing the viewer every time you look at it, you should report it on their Issue Tracker in Discord.
- Pro Tip: Developers love โreproducible steps.โ Donโt just say โIt crashed.โ Say: โI teleported to Sandbox Island, rezzed a cube, right-clicked it, and then crashed.โ

โ ๏ธ Before You Ask for Help
Most โbugsโ are actually just corrupt data on your end. Before you jump into the Discord and scream for help, try these three steps. This solves 90% of Alchemy issues:
The โCleanโ Re-install
Old settings often clash with new updates. Uninstall the viewer, go to your AppData folder (%APPDATA%/Alchemy), and delete the entire folder before reinstalling.
Nuke the Texture Cache
If textures look blurry or grey, your cache is corrupt. Go to Preferences > Network & Files and click Clear Cache. Restart the viewer immediately.
Cap Your Bandwidth
Setting this too high causes packet loss (lag). Set your bandwidth slider to 1500kbps. This is the sweet spot for stability.
Final Thoughts
Alchemy is not for everyone. It lacks some of the โhand-holdingโ tools of Firestorm, and the interface requires muscle memory to relearn. However, once you experience the 15-20 FPS boost and the crispness of the PBR rendering, it is very hard to go back.
The community might be smaller, but itโs highly knowledgeable. If youโre willing to learn the technical side of Second Life, youโll fit right in.
You can download the latest version of the viewer directly from the Official Alchemy Viewer Website.

Alchemy was pretty horrible the first time I tried it, so it’s great to see that it has a lot more features now and is being recommended.
