Gor is the most infamous roleplay community in Second Life. Based on the novels by John Norman, itโs a world of โCounter-Earthโ barbarism, strict caste systems, and, yes, slavery. It has a reputation for being intense, hostile, and declining in popularity. But thatโs not the whole story. While casual players have left for games like Conan Exiles, the Second Life Gorean community has distilled into something far more interesting: a hardcore, player-run civilization that has survived for 20 years.
This guide is not a defense of the books. It is a Survival Guide for anyone brave (or curious) enough to step onto the yellow sands.

What is Gor roleplay in Second Life?
Gor offers residents a chance to jump into a brutal universe where โMight Makes Right.โ Itโs portrayed in settings reminiscent of ancient Roman, Viking, or tribal civilizations. Unlike other Second Life RP communities that follow loose rules, Gorean sims form tight-knit, autonomous city-states. They set their own laws, their own caste structures, and their own punishments. However, before you enter, you must understand the two main factions.
The Two Factions: BTB vs. Gor Evolved
Before you teleport anywhere, you must understand the war between the two philosophies. If you walk into a โBTBโ sim wearing fantasy armour, you will be banned. If you walk into a โGEโ sim expecting strict book lore, you will be confused.
| Feature | BTB (By The Book) | GE (Gor Evolved) |
|---|---|---|
| Philosophy | Strict adherence to John Normanโs novels. | โSpiritโ of the books, but adapted for fun. |
| Combat | Realism / Dice / Text | Meter Combat (Pew Pew) |
| Fantasy Elements | Banned (No magic/elves) | Sometimes Allowed (Nekos etc.) |
| Female Roles | Strictly limited (Mostly slaves) | More freedom (Warriors/Panthers) |
The State of the Grid: Is Gor Dead?
If you Google โGor in Second Life,โ you will see forum posts from 2017 asking if it is dying. In 2026, the honest answer is: No, but it has shrunk. Ten years ago, there were hundreds of Gorean sims, many of them empty. Today, the community has condensed into a smaller number of โSuper Hubs.โ
- The Change: Casual players left for Conan Exiles. The players who remained in Second Life are the die-hards.
- The Reality: You wonโt find 50 active sims anymore. You will find 5 or 6 extremely active ones. The roleplay is higher quality because the population is concentrated, but the days of stumbling into a random populated sim by accident are over. You have to go where the people are.
The Tech: You Need a Combat Meter
You cannot simply โRoleplayโ a fight in most Gorean sims; you must use a Meter. The Gorean Living Meter (GLM) or similar HUDs track your health, stamina, and status.
- Status: If your health hits zero, you are โdefeated.โ
- The Capture Rule: In many sims, a defeated player can be โboundโ (scripted capture). Depending on the sim rules, this can lead to a strict capture period where you are a prisoner.
- Jessโ Advice: Always read the meter rules at the landing point. Entering a combat zone without a meter is often considered โInvalidโ or โCheating.โ
The History and Origins of Gor roleplay in Second Life
The popular science fiction novels written by John Norman trace the origins of Gor roleplay. The first book, Tarnsman of Gor (1966), introduced a world where technology and slavery coexist. In the early 2000s, Second Life became the perfect platform for this. The flexibility of the grid allowed communities to build their own โCounter-Earths,โ transplanting the brutal lore of the books into a virtual reality.
Gorean Transplanted Cultures
A central aspect of the Gorean universe is the concept of โtransplanted cultures.โ The lore states that the Priest Kings gathered samples of human cultures from Earth and relocated them to Gor. This allows for a massive variety of roleplay settings:
| Region | Earth Equivalent | The Vibe |
|---|---|---|
| Torvaldsland | Vikings / Norse | Pre-Christian raiders, longships, and axes. Fiercely independent. |
| The Pani | Feudal Japan | Samurai culture, Shoguns, and strict honour codes (Bushido-style). |
| The Tahari | Bedouin / Desert | Nomadic tribes, oasis trade, and intricate veil/tent culture. |
| Wagon Peoples | Mongolian / Tuchuk | Nomadic herdsmen who live on the vast plains. Masters of the bow. |
| The Barrens | Native American | Tribal societies living on the edge of the civilized maps. |

The Caste System (And What to Wear)
Every caste in Gor operates under strict codes. Your profession dictates your social status, your rights, and, importantly, your clothing. Do not wear the wrong colour. It is an in-character crime.
| Caste | The Color | The Vibe |
|---|---|---|
| Warriors | Scarlet (Red) | The military and police. Highest authority. |
| Scribes | Blue | Lawyers, accountants, historians. Dangerous intellects. |
| Initiates | White | Priests. They hold immense political power. |
| Merchants | Gold / White | Traders. They run the economy (and the slave trade). |
| Physicians | Green | Healers. Generally neutral in combat. |
Sex, Gender & โThe Natural Orderโ
The Gorean philosophy operates on โThe Natural Orderโ which is the belief that biology dictates destiny. Men are viewed as dominant protectors; women are viewed as needing submission or protection. But is it that simple? In the books, women like Tarna (a bandit leader) or the women of Tharna (who ruled men) prove that Gorean women are not monolithic.
- The Kajira (Slave): The most common role in SL. For her, slavery is not just service; it is a โSlave Fireโ which is a state of being where she finds purpose in submission.
- The Free Woman: She is haughty, protected, and often more ruthless than the men.
- The Panther Girl: A forest-dwelling outlaw who rejects male authority (a very popular role in Second Life).

What is a Gorean Slave?
In Gorean law, a slave is not a person; she is an animal. She has no name, no rights, and exists solely to please her owner.
- Kajirus: Male Slave (Yes, they exist). The saying โIt is only a fool who frees a slave girlโ underscores the mindset: In Gorean eyes, a slave has more value (monetary and aesthetic) than a free woman, who is often viewed as โuselessโ until she is collared.
- Kajira: Female Slave.
Getting Started: A Step-by-Step Plan
If you are ready to try it, donโt just teleport to a random sim. You will be ignored or killed.
- The Tutorial (Important): Teleport to the Gorean Campus. This is your university. Do not skip this. Take a class on the โCaste Systemโ and pick up a free Combat Meter (GLM).
- Create a Character: Decide your origin. Are you a โTransplantโ from Earth (easy for newbies because you can act confused ICly) or Gorean born?
- The Name Game: You donโt need to pay Linden Labs to change your account name. Gorean meters use a โDisplay Nameโ or โTitlerโ system. You simply type your roleplay name into your meter (e.g.,
/name Tarl), and it will appear above your head. - Dress the Part: Buy โSilksโ (for slaves) or โRobes/Tunicsโ (for Free). Do not wear modern clothes, Neko ears, or wings. You will be banned from BTB sims instantly.
- Observe First: Once you leave the campus, go to a Trade Hub (like the City of Olni). Sit. Watch. Listen to the formal speech patterns (the โtheesโ and โthousโ are a myth, but the tone is serious).
Where to Learn: The Gorean Campus
The #1 mistake new players make is teleporting directly into a โHardcoreโ combat sim. You will be ignored, captured, or banned for not knowing the rules. Your first stop must be the Gorean Campus.
- What it is: An OOC (Out of Character) learning environment. It is a โSafe Zoneโ where roleplay combat is disabled.
- Why go there:
- Free Classes: They teach everything from โHow to Serveโ to โWarrior Combat Tactics.โ
- Free Meters: You can pick up the standard combat meters (GLM/GM) for free.
- No Judgment: Everyone there is learning. You can ask โstupid questionsโ without a High Caste Warrior chopping your head off.
- Jessโ Advice: Spend your first week here. Do not leave until you understand how your meter works.

Etiquette and Rules
- Consent: Outside of combat capture mechanics, sexual roleplay usually requires consent. However, in โGor,โ entering the sim often implies โGeneral Consentโ to be captured or verbally abused. Read the covenant!
- Stay True to Lore: Do not bring your vampire or neko tail into a BTB sim.
- Communication: Use brackets
(( like this ))for Out of Character (OOC) chat. Keep OOC chatter to a minimum.
The Gorean Philosophy
| The Maxim | The Meaning |
|---|---|
| โBe What You AreโAuthenticity | Embrace your nature. Pretending to be something you are not (e.g., a weak man pretending to be strong, or a submissive woman pretending to be dominant) is seen as a rejection of reality. |
| โBe Who You AreโSocial Identity | Respect the Caste. While talent dictates mobility, most Goreans view their hereditary Caste as their core identity. A Warrior is a warrior by blood, not just by job title. |
| โObey the Natural OrderโBiology is Destiny | Gender roles are absolute. Men are viewed as protectors and providers by biological design. Women are viewed as the emotional/supportive core of the species. To fight biology is futile. |
| โDo What You WillโSelf-Actualization | Find success within your role. A slave can be โperfectโ just as a King can be. The goal is not equality, but to be the absolute best version of your specific station in life. |
| โResponsibilityโCause & Effect | Actions have consequences. There are no safety nets. If a Warrior draws his steel, he must be ready to die. If a woman submits, she must accept the collar. Accountability is total. |

Gor is empty in recent times and the roleplay is unfortunately dull. The average Gorean has never read a book and it is a very hateful genre.
