Virtual Sex Etiquette in Second Life | How Not to Be a Dick When You Fuck

Last Updated on: 28th July 2025, 01:36 am

If youโ€™ve spent more than twenty minutes in Second Life then youโ€™ve probably already had sex. Or thought about it. Or stumbled face-first into someone elseโ€™s naked adventure while minding your own business. Itโ€™s everywhere. Strip clubs, escort bars, roleplay sims and even someoneโ€™s weird little beach shack with a heart bed and a glowing dildo collection.

And while a few people might proudly shout that they โ€œdonโ€™t do pixel sex,โ€ the rest of us so. But hereโ€™s the thing, just because itโ€™s virtual doesnโ€™t mean manners go out the window. Thereโ€™s something called virtual sex etiquette, and far too many people are getting it very, very wrong.

It really doesnโ€™t matter if youโ€™re a complete newbie who just attached your dick for the first time or a veteran who still hasnโ€™t figured out that 20MB worth of attachments is why your sex scenes look like a PowerPoint slideshow, this post is for all of you. Virtual sex etiquette is important because it keeps things hot, smooth, and fun instead of awkward, laggy, or being straight-up rage-quit worthy.

So letโ€™s run through some of the unspoken rules you should already knowโ€ฆ but probably donโ€™t.

Virtual Sex Etiquette in Second Life | How Not to Be a Dick When You Fuck

Foreplay Starts in IMs | Why Talking First is Just Good Virtual Sex Etiquette

One of the most underrated parts of virtual sex etiquette is the chat that comes before anyone gets naked. Youโ€™d think thatโ€™s common sense, right? But nope. Go to any free sex sim or sex hangout, and youโ€™ll find men treating โ€œWanna fuck?โ€ like itโ€™s the absolute height of romantic seduction.

Back when I first joined Second Life, I spent way more time in random sex sims than I do now, and trust me this shit drove me insane even then. Thereโ€™s this complete disconnect between what people want and what they think the other person wants. Especially for us as women. We like a little clarity, a little connection and a bit of a vibe check. Are we roleplaying something wild? Raunchy? Should I bring out my wicked side or my vanilla side? Do I need to prepare for three lines of dirty talk or a full-on sex novella thatโ€™ll keep me locked in a typing loop for the next forty-five minutes?

But for a lot of men, and I mean a lot, itโ€™s like they skipped every memo ever sent about sex etiquette. They think hopping on a piece of furniture and growling โ€œTake itโ€ is the only prep work required. Itโ€™s really fucking not.

So hereโ€™s the deal. Before you jump into anything crotch-first, just talk. Like a normal person. Lay out what youโ€™re into, ask what theyโ€™re into. Set some basic expectations. It doesnโ€™t have to be a lengthy negotiation scene, but give the other person something to work with.

Good virtual sex etiquette starts with respect, and respect starts with not assuming your cock or your fantasy is enough to carry the entire scene. Communicate, confirm, then cum.

Less Scripts, More Screwing

It blows my mind that we are two decades into Second Life and people still donโ€™t get that theyโ€™re the main reason things slow to a crawl. Lag doesnโ€™t just appear like a ghost in the machine by the way. You are the ghost and youโ€™re very fucking noticeable.

Second Life servers donโ€™t really care how many people are there nearly as much as they care how many scripts are being run at once. So if you show up with your INM system, your INM HUD, your slap-this, rub-that, spank-me accessories, your Lovense HUD, your titler, your AO, your dance HUD, your cigarette with smoke particles, your collar, your Project Arousal, and your moaning sound system then congratulations because you are a walking lag bomb. And when everyone freezes mid-thrust, guess who is to blame?

Good virtual sex etiquette means being self-aware. So strip your attachments down to what you absolutely need. No one needs you to be a Swiss Army sex doll when youโ€™re trying to get off. Keep your script weight low, especially on high-traffic sims. Itโ€™s not just your pleasure youโ€™re fucking up, youโ€™re lagging out your partners, your audience, and the whole sim. If you want smooth animations and emotes that donโ€™t take 2 minutes to show up (if they donโ€™t get completely lost in the void) then stop running every attachment you own like youโ€™re trying to win some sort of contest.

Be sexy and smart but more important a decent resource user.

Privacy Is a Pillar of Virtual Sex Etiquette

Look, I know itโ€™s tempting. Youโ€™re horny, youโ€™re curious and youโ€™re mid-emote and you think youโ€™ve found the pixel version of your soulmate. But let me make this crystal fucking clear: this is Second Life, not Match.com. And unless weโ€™ve spent more than thirty minutes together without either of us faking an orgasm, you donโ€™t need to know where I live, what I do, or what age I am.

Behind every avatar is a real person. Thatโ€™s obvious, right? Jobs, families, real-world commitments. Maybe theyโ€™re a lawyer, maybe theyโ€™re a barista, maybe theyโ€™re married with kids who think โ€œMummyโ€™s doing work emailsโ€ while sheโ€™s getting railed on a BDSM horse. Either way, virtual sex etiquette means respecting that wall of separation. Most of us are here to escape real life, not repackage it with someone whose dick that detaches.

You wouldnโ€™t believe how many conversations go from โ€œHi sexyโ€ to โ€œSo where you from?โ€ in two messages flat. And for what? So you can pretend it means more when you inevitably teleport out right after you cum? If the goal is just to get off โ€“ and letโ€™s be honest, thatโ€™s 99% of you โ€“ then no one needs to exchange blood types or star signs. Youโ€™re not really here to form a long-term connection, youโ€™re trying to fuck.

If real life details come up naturally, cool. I donโ€™t mind talking about them. But when your opening line is an FBI intake form then youโ€™re just being intrusive. Good virtual sex etiquette means keeping your curiosity in your pants until youโ€™ve earned a reason to be curious.

You want to talk about where Iโ€™m from? Try not asking me before you blow your load in me.

No One Wants to Fuck a Glitch | Keep It Cohesive

I donโ€™t care how good your avatar looks because if your sex scenes jump around like a cocaine-riddled kangaroo clicking every pose on a sex sofa, Iโ€™m gone. Doggy for 30 seconds, reverse cowgirl for another 30, missionary as a quick pit stop, then back to doggy again before your brain finally lands on โ€œmaybe riding was betterโ€ โ€“ what the actual fuck are you doing? Playing Pose Roulette?

Virtual sex etiquette means immersion, not just looking hot or throwing moaning words in chat. Itโ€™s about feeling like itโ€™s happening and when you jump around like a horny flea, the entire scene turns from sexy to awkward real quick. Most of us are writing emotes that react to your movements and your words. So when your cock is here one second and your entire bodyโ€™s flipped to something else before we even finish the first emote, itโ€™s like trying to fuck in a blender.

Worse still are the people who write a hot, filthy emote that actually gets you goingโ€ฆ and then follow it up with โ€œ((lol BRB checking lasagne it smells burnt))โ€. I swear to god, you just dried me up faster than a pack of silica gel. Like, either fuck me or feed me, but donโ€™t try doing both in the same breath.

If you want to do this right, do it right. Lock into a pose, build up some tension and give your partner time to respond. Let the fantasy breathe and make it feel real. Thatโ€™s how you show basic, bare minimum virtual sex etiquette.

Itโ€™s not hard โ€“ unless you actually want to get hard, in which case, stop breaking fucking immersion like a clueless noob and get your lasagne after.

Donโ€™t Skip the Script, Dumbass

Virtual sex lives or dies on how well you emote and more importantly, how well you pay attention. Think of it like a scene in a movie. When itโ€™s done right, it flows and it makes you feel something. But when itโ€™s done wrong itโ€™s like watching a bad improv group fall apart on stage while everyone silently wishes for death.

Youโ€™re having sex with someone. That means there are two people in this (maybe more). Two brains, two keyboards, two sets of filthy thoughts getting translated into pixels and prose. So the words have to bounce just like the bodies do. They type something, you read it and you respond to it. You donโ€™t just type out whatever horny thingโ€™s in your head and ignore everything else. Thatโ€™s just masturbation with a fucking witness.

Example time: Letโ€™s say I emote that Iโ€™ve tied you to a post with your arms behind your back and dildo gag shoved deep in your throat. Youโ€™re drooling and gasping. Youโ€™re completely at my mercy. Then your next emote is you crawling over to lick my feet. Are you fucking serious? Youโ€™re literally tied up, gagged and immobile so unless this is some David Blaine escape act, what the fuck are you doing?

This happens all the time. Constantly. And I could write an entire essay on why this particular form of cluelessness seems to plague cis men in SL more than anyone else. I could go into brain sizes, attention spans and how half of them are probably typing with one hand which causes their synapses to short circuit. But I wonโ€™t. Iโ€™ll just say this: if you want to get better at virtual sex etiquette, start by reading what your partner types. Actually read it and let it sink in. Then respond to it. Thatโ€™s the magic.

Otherwise, you might as well just be humping the furniture while the rest of us quietly detach our pussy and go shopping.

Donโ€™t Be the Reason Someone Logs Off

Donโ€™t treat virtual sex like itโ€™s some kind of lawless wasteland where anything goes and nothing matters because it isnโ€™t. Itโ€™s not a pit of random dicks and lazy typing. Itโ€™s where a little bit of effort, a dash of emotional intelligence, and a few brain cells rubbed together can actually create sex worth remembering.

If youโ€™ve made it this far and your ego hasnโ€™t imploded then well done โ€“ you might just have what it takes to be good at virtual sex. That means actually communicating like a human, cutting down your over-scripted 15-attachment orgy to something the sim can handle, respecting boundaries and privacy, keeping the things cohesive and sexy, and actually reading your partnerโ€™s emotes.

Because yes, youโ€™re here to have fun. But so is everyone else. And sometimes youโ€™re going to click with someone and itโ€™s going to be amazing and sometimes itโ€™s going to be awkward and weird and youโ€™ll fake an emergency just to TP out and save face. When that happens youโ€™ll probably look back and realize they broke at least one of the etiquette rules we just went over.

So donโ€™t be that maniac. Donโ€™t be the one people talk shit about later. Be the one they hope to see logged in again.

And if I missed a piece of your personal etiquette gospel then drop it in the comments.

Until next time.

Not sure if this counts as its own rule or just ties into that first point about chatting and getting to know each other but reading someoneโ€™s profile properly matters. Sometimes itโ€™s the difference between having a great time and accidentally stepping way over the line right from the start.

Great list luv I agree with all of it. My own personal thing I think is good etiquette is not doing the same emotes over n over. I get thereโ€™s only so many ways to write stuff but Iโ€™ve been with a load who just type the same thing again n again. Doing “licking you” 20 times thereโ€™s just no immersion in that but now that I think about it, it probly comes under your point about paying attention and responding properly anyway.
