I really appreciated this insight. It reminded me of how many times I’ve come across the very same things you’ve described. One of the first lessons I had to learn was protecting myself from the weight of other people’s problems. It’s not easy, and it is such a fine line to tread. If you don’t hold that boundary, you end up carrying far more than you should. What often gets forgotten is that this work is transactional, no matter how much we may like to pretend otherwise. That’s part of the fantasy. But when escorts blur that line between the fantasy and the reality, it only makes things harder for the rest of us who keep it clear.

I’m returning to SL after a long hiatus and I use to be around the same place all the time and that’s how I built my avatar. It was not exactly a way of earning a life, but it worked. And I remember one guy in particular, who would hire me just to hang around with him, go to sims, stores, and later we would go to his house and cuddle for a while. I could barely deal with that thinking of how sad his life probably were.

I add something, though:

Somebody who lives in a country where the average daily salary and, subsequently, the cost of living is low can very well make a real life of being a Second Life prostitute.

Think of the Philipines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, India, Bulgaria…

Of course, for us Europeans (Ur Americans), ist peanuts. I make a lot more money with ads on the blog than with escorting.

It is not unlike in RL in many ways I think. I know a couple of (Former) RL sex workers who previously had worked in healthcare. They face very similar connections with their clients and are required to detach emotionally by the nature of their profession.
Some of them may go pretty far in their involvement, but they will know their own limits: I know an escort who is now well into her 60’s and has previously been invited by a client’s family to attend his funeral. She went. With another client, in his 80’s, she consulted with family on his heart condition and the possibility he might die in the act. They agreed it would be an acceptable risk.
